JUMPJET CIRCUS PROJECT
The Westside Circus, in partnership with the Migrant Resource Centre North-West Region (MRCNW) and the South Eastern Region Migrant Resource Centre (SERMRC, has just established a new two-year community cultural development project entitled JUMPJET CIRCUS. The project will bring circus and performance to refugee young people in the outer Western and South Eastern regions of metropolitan Melbourne . JUMPJET CIRCUS will take the form of two programs, one each in the City of Brimbank , and the City of Greater Dandenong. With partnership development, circus skill training, performance making, leadership and role modelling components, the JUMPJET CIRCUS project will have a lasting impact on the lives of young refugees and on cultural development in the region. The JUMPJET CIRCUS project will provide opportunities for personal growth and expression through participation in a 'safe' arts and community-based activity. It will also increase participants' knowledge of support services and assist with settlement issues. The circus training program will directly build confidence through personal expression and the development of individual ideas in a group context. The performance program invites the community and general public to share in the expression of the participants building empathy, knowledge and respect. The leadership and training components of the project will help young people to help others and to become active members of their community. This arts activity is one that can make a significant impact on the development of a healthy community in the Western and South Eastern regions of Melbourne . |
