What is the Westside Circus Outreach Program?
The Westside Circus Outreach Program makes innovative and accessible circus workshops available to schools, businesses and community groups all over Victoria.
Each workshop is tailored to the needs of the participants and includes activities that are both challenging and fun. A Westside Circus workshop might include juggling, hula-hoops, plate or feather balancing, partner acro-balance or group pyramid building and aerials such as trapeze, cloudswing and tissu.
The workshops are led by professional circus trainers who are also trained in social circus- a philosophy of circus for social change. Social circus training involves learning hands-on practical skills for using circus as a tool to facilitate personal and social growth and increase access and participation for people of all abilities.
What can be achieved?
In 2007, Westside Circus is set to reach approximately 7,000 participants. Here are a few examples of the groups we have worked with in the past:
> Going Off Tap
An anger management program for young men. Circus workshops formed part of a program of activities aimed at giving young men a greater understanding of how and why they get angry and how to manage anger. Peer support, high challenge activities and trust-building exercises formed a core component of the circus workshops.
> Ringwood Heights Primary School- Amazing Kids Circus
The whole school learned and then performed circus for their community on the school oval. Each grade level, all the teachers, and the parents participated in workshops over eight weeks, and devised and were directed in their own circus performance creation.
> SCOPE - Circus Group
Participants with disabilities from SCOPE attended circus workshops once a month and discovered the extraordinary feats they were capable of. The participants played games and learned skills, such as performing group acrobatic balancing and scarf juggling.
